Underline the THESIS and each TOPIC SENTENCE in every critical review essay you submit. This exercise will force you to make certain that you have expressed and developed the ideas in your essay clearly and logically.  (In other words, do not do this exercise five minutes before you submit the essay but, rather, as you are working on the very first draft.)

  1. Every essay that you write for this course must have a clear thesis, placed (perhaps) somewhere near the end of the introductory paragraph. Simply stated, a THESIS (or ARGUMENT) expresses, preferably in a single sentence, the point you want to make about the text that is the subject of your essay. A THESIS should be an opinion or interpretation of the text, not merely a fact or observation.  The best possible THESIS will answer some specific questions about the text. Very often the THESIS contains an outline of the major points to be covered in the essay. A possible thesis for an essay on character in Perry Henzell’s The Harder They Come might read somewhat as follows:

The protagonist of THTC is not a hero in the epic sense of the word, but a self-centered young man bred of economic oppression and cultural dependency. The characters in this film have no real psychological depth, but are markers for a society of consumption and momentary glory.

(You might then go on to exemplify from the text and argue in favor or against this interpretation: your essay need not hold to only one perspective.)

What single, clear QUESTION does the above THESIS attempt to answer?

  2. Each essay should be organized into five (5) paragraphs, each based on one of two to four major ideas, which will comprise the BODY of the essay. Each paragraph must have a topic sentence, often (but not always) towards the beginning of the paragraph, which clearly states the ARGUMENT or point to be made in the paragraph. Following the thesis set forth above, the first paragraph might begin with a sentence like “Ivan’s desires and his destiny are signaled in the opening shots of the film, where the friendly, jumbled interior of the bus is contrasted with Ivan’s first view of the outer world: a world of shiny white cars and beautiful women.” Avoid topic sentences that fail to make an interpretative statement about the work or that merely state something any reader might observe; for example, “The first characters we see are country people on a bus to town.”
  4. Always use present tense verbs in your critical review essays about film texts.  Present tense is the verb tense of analysis.  Past tense, on the other hand, is the tense of narration. In each essay, you will be analyzing a particular text, not retelling or summarizing the story.  If you find yourself slipping into past tense as you compose, you are probably narrating rather than analyzing.
  5. Use specific passages from the text to support each point that you make in your essay. You may simply refer to an event in the text, or you may paraphrase what a character or the narrator says. But the best EVIDENCE will most often be direct quotes from the text.

The Introductory Paragraph – Some Approaches

In your essay, an opening or introductory paragraph may not always be the first one you write.  But it will be the first one your readers read and you need to engage your readers’ attention and interest and present all you need to make your thesis clear and convincing.

  1. Some Pitfalls to Avoid
    1. Dictionary definitions:  Define key terms and concepts in your opening paragraph, but don’t quote directly from the dictionary to do so. Use a dictionary – more than one dictionary – to formulate the definition in your own words.
    2. Generalizations about “life,” “society,” “people today,” etc.: You don’t want to begin your essay with the kind of statement that teeters on that fine line between opinion (those ideas you will go on to prove) and belief (those ideas unprovable with the evidence offered by the text).  Rather than a statement like, “Almost every man has a sense of pride and will go to war to prove it,” try something more specific to the text you are analyzing.  “The character of Roland exemplifies how personal pride and personal valor do not always lead to the most fortunate conclusion.”
    3. The painfully obvious:  Avoid opening statements like “Dante’s Inferno is about a journey to hell,” or “Roland is the hero of The Song of Roland,” unless such statements are in some way controversial and challenging to traditional interpretations of the text. Try to avoid any kind of tautological formula – “something is something else” – in the opening sentence, especially, but also elsewhere as an “argument.”
    4. Try to distinguish between historical or biographical fact:  “Dante’s Inferno was written in fourteenth-century Italy,” and interpretation, especially when you are considering the intention of an author:  “Dante wrote his Inferno to expose the problem of Florentine political corruption to the world.” The latter may be a part of your theory or thesis (or conclusion) but if you use it as a statement of fact (an “intentional fallacy”) you will have to prove it rather than merely argue it – a slippery and difficult and perhaps not particularly useful task. Beware also of using vague or imprecise generalizations of terms such as “dramatic,” “realistic,” or “critical,” which differ in their literary and historical significance.
  2. Challenges to Meet
    1. Try for a (syntactically) shapely and relevant opening sentence: be thoughtful and original and persuasive.  Always look for interesting ways into your essay: an epigraph, perhaps, or an important episode that seems to set the stage for what you want to say, or a succinct comparison with another well-known work, which will help your reader understand the point you want to make.
    2. Always (particularly in a comparative essay) identify your texts early on. (Usually with full title, full authors’ names, and date/period of publication.)
    3. Think of your thesis statement as the logical goal of the first paragraph. Everything you say here should lead towards (or from) that thesis. Anything that doesn’t lead in that direction – unless you are presenting a view different from yours, which you want to argue against—doesn’t belong in your paragraph.  Think of the paragraph as a funnel, where the contents are being concentrated and filtered to one end.

What factors raised concerns among the hospital’s managers about the demand and utilization of the facility as a general community hospital, and how did the market analysis validate those concerns?

Review Case Study 8.1 in your textbook on pp. 240–241, and answer the questions that are provided below. In essay format, provide a complete and detailed response to each question. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your essay. Each of the responses should be compiled into a document that consists of at least two pages. Your essay should address the following questions:

What factors raised concerns among the hospital’s managers about the demand and utilization of the facility as a general community hospital, and how did the market analysis validate those concerns? How are the factors that raised concerns in the hospital different from those in other industries?
What steps were taken to determine the most appropriate focus for the hospital’s services?
How would one describe the strategic planning process the managers chose, and to what types of services did it direct them?
How could branding be used to educate patients in the niche strategy that the managers decided upon?

Finally, an inherent risk associated with a legislature that limits telehealth services pertains to reimbursement. State laws and rules regarding reimbursement rates for telehealth services differ, even within the same jurisdiction, for telemedicine profitability are driven primarily by payers, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance companies (Fanburg & Walzman, 2018). Such inconsistency in reimbursement rules for telehealth services can create weak incentives among providers to expand telehealth care. Thus, each provider must be aware of legal policies governing telehealth practice within respective jurisdictions to promote telehealth services successfully.

Write a 2 Paragraph response (with 2-3 sources) to this post offering additional/alternative ideas regarding opportunities and risks related to the observations shared.

Healthcare system presently is faced with challenges to improving quality of care and controlling costs and according to the Institute of Medicine, electronic health records (EHR) serve as a solution to these challenges (2001). The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) passed by President Barack Obama promotes the adaptation of EHR system by providing health organizations and providers with incentives through Medicare and Medicaid for meaningful utilization of EHR systems (McGonigle&Mastrian, 2017). Technology in nursing has evolved and transformed the way nurses work and continues to grow, along with the role’s nurses play in today’s health care environment (Melissa Wirkus, 2016).For many years the paper chat served as the patient’s primary medical records such as medical histories, medical diagnosis, medications, and other pertinent patient information. In the future, an expected healthcare technology trend in nursing practice will be a significant increase in the use of the Electronic health record (EHR) instead of the traditional paper charting As technology continues to grow so does additional information technology that helps caregivers, engage patients and improve efficiencies and better patient outcomes (Laureate Education, 2018). For example, patients can now have access to their medical health records at their own convenient through online portals and can effectively communicate with their health care provider. In addition, patients are also using social media platforms like Facebook and twitter to get/communicate with others with the same health-related diagnosis.

According to McGonigle & Mastrain “Public health information systems represent a partnership of federal, state, and local public health professionals” (2017). In the present-day majority of health care organizations are embracing the implementation of electronic health records. In the hospital I work, we are making use of the Meditech operating system. Patient medical histories, diagnosis, home medications, and current medications are updated and readily available. During patient’s hospital stay, all health care providers can log in with their personal access codes to document as well as view patients’ labs, patient notes, care plans and so on. More so, one intriguing benefit for the patients is during the patient’s hospital stay and at discharge, patients are educated about our patient portal where they can easily log in to look up their personal medical records.

Potential Risk/ Challenge Associated with data Safety.

A potential risk associated with data and or technology safety is the lack of patient confidentiality. For example, when a nurse who is from a different unit assesses patient medical records they took care of three days before, that is considered a break in patients ‘confidentiality because that nurse has no reason viewing records of a patient who is not assigned to them. At my facility, they monitor nurses who try to access a patient’s chart without proper authorization. This can lead to disciplinary action or termination of employment. The administration has zero tolerance for this behavior. With advancement in information technology patient’s vital information such as test results, labs, and assessments are automatically synched from the operating machine to the appropriate patient’s EMR. This prevents possible errors that can arise with paper documentation. At my current organization, the Meditech EMR system is utilized to its full extent. The EMR system allows a congruent flow inpatient care from providers and clinicians and prevents possible human errors. Informatics has assisted in the incorporation of information technology in healthcare delivery, by providing a haven for patients’ data and making valuable patient data readily available for treatment.

As stated above, a current and future trend that has evolved and still evolving is the introduction of social media and telehealth. Currently, telehealth is trending I have seen many health-related groups on Facebook where patients with the same diagnoses communicate, ask questions, and even get healthcare provider recommendations. Telehealth, on the other hand, is the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to assist and promote long-distance clinical health care systems (McGonigle&Mastrian, 2017). For example, individuals who are looking for quick answers to their health problems, and maybe have no means of transportation, telehealth is beneficial for them in the comfort of their homes. Services like this offer patient immediate healthcare consult/answers and refrains patient from going to the emergency room and sitting there for several hours before being attended to. This impacts nursing practice positively. Telehealth nursing can be done anywhere. Nurses can make use of technology to conduct telehealth sessions in their homes, at doctor’s offices, in prisons, and in clinics and hospitals. Basically, any place where the proper technology is available is a suitable place for telehealth nursing. For example, in emergencies, nurses from around the world can participate in telephone triage set-ups. Wherever nursing is done in a telehealth setting, nurses can monitor a patient’s oxygen levels, heart rate, respiration, blood glucose and more. In addition, patients contact their nurses through the telehealth system to get help. In non-emergency situations, they can get the nurse to take their blood pressure readings or glucose readings, for instance. Nurses can instruct patients as to how to dress a wound or treat a minor burn. The patients usually find their telehealth nurses through their managed health care organization. Nurses must be overseen there to regulate patient access to the system. Most of the time, the goal is to reduce the number of trips patients make to the ER.

The appeal of hotels is plateauing

J.D. POWER, a market-research company, has released the 2016 results of its annual hotel satisfaction survey for the United States, Canada and Mexico. At first blush, it seems a ringing endorsement of the hotel industry. Contentment among customers is at an all-time high, and has risen for four years in a row. But the report also contains some bad news. It is going to become increasingly difficult to impress guests with perks they have come to take for granted. The firm expects satisfaction levels to start tumbling in the coming years.

Patrons were once lured by amenities like free wireless internet and breakfast. Now, as Rick Garlick of J.D. Power told the travel website Skift, “they are no longer new and interesting.” Instead, he goes on, “Guests are asking, ‘what have you done for me lately?'”

The biggest problem for the hotel industry is a demographic one. According to the survey, satisfaction is significantly higher among guests who are members of a hotel’s reward programme. But while 66% of hotels’ baby-boomer clients are rewards members, and 56% of Generation Xers are, just 39% of millennial guests have signed up for a scheme.

“We’re finding that every succeeding generation seems to be less likely to be a member of a hotel rewards programme than the one before,” says Mr Garlick. “As we’ve seen across numerous industries that J.D. Power tracks, younger guests in particular are especially driven by the value proposition.”

Call it the Airbnb effect, perhaps. As another Gulliver recently reported, the use of Airbnb properties by business travellers around the world more than tripled last year. Partly, that’s because hosts have become better at catering for those on corporate trips. Partly, it’s because big companies have grown more comfortable with Airbnb as an alternative to the staid hotels of old. But largely, it’s because the travellers themselves want a more engaging experience than hotels typically offer. They want to stay in lively neighbourhoods rather than hotel districts, and to be able to cook meals if they are staying for more than a couple of nights. On a recent business trip, this Gulliver opted for Airbnb for that very reason–the prospect of six days of eating out seemed exhausting, time consuming and expensive.

That may be why the appeal of hotels is plateauing, and the perks they offer seem less exciting. (What is tempting about a free hotel breakfast of Danishes and cold cereal out of a dispenser when you can cook omelettes in your own kitchen?) Likewise, Airbnb can offer greater value for an equally satisfying stay. According the J.D. Power survey, the increase in overall hotel satisfaction was small this year, and the increase in satisfaction on the matter of cost more minuscule still.

Still, among traditional hotels, there remain favourites and less-than-favourites. The Ritz-Carlton was the most beloved luxury hotel group for the second consecutive year, earning the highest score in the survey’s 20-year history. It was trailed by Four Seasons and JW Marriott, with the Grand Hyatt and W Hotels receiving the lowest luxury scores. Omni got top marks among “upper upscale” hotels for the second year running, with Kimpton in second and Sheraton at the bottom. Hilton Garden Inn was the top choice among upscale hotels.

The three most important hotel amenities, according to guests who took the survey, are free wi-fi, breakfast and parking. And while Airbnb has made inroads in these areas, traditional hotels probably still think they have an edge there. For now, at least.

Reflect on your fieldwork, or perhaps identify an existential question that might arise in working with the client in the case study you have selected throughout the course.

Upon hearing the stories of sometimes horrific atrocities clients or client families have experienced, you as a social worker may find yourself confronting existential questions such as Why? For example, Why do horrible events happen to good people? Why do people abuse their children?

Trying to make sense of such trauma is not easy, and you may seek answers to these existential questions your whole life. And yet, there are opportunities for growth despite trauma for both clients and social workers. This is known as post-traumatic growth, where a renewed sense purpose or a more profound outlook on life is the by-product.

In this Discussion, you work to seek meaning from the trauma your clients experience and the subsequent healing you help your clients achieve in your social work practice.

To prepare:

  • Read about trauma-informed social work, and read this article listed in the Learning Resources: Vis, J.-A., & Boynton, H. M. (2008). Spirituality and transcendent meaning making: possibilities for enhancing posttraumatic growth. Journal of Religion & Spirituality in Social Work, 27(1/2): 69–86. http://dx.doi.org.ezp.waldenulibrary.org/10.1080/15426430802113814

Post:

  • In 1 sentence, identify an existential question with which you have grappled in relation to a client who has been traumatized.
    • Reflect on your fieldwork, or perhaps identify an existential question that might arise in working with the client in the case study you have selected throughout the course.
  • In 3 to 4 brief sentences, describe where there is potential for growth for the client as a result of the trauma.
  • In 3 to 4 brief sentences, explain where there is potential for growth for you, the social worker, as a result of listening to the client’s stories and bearing witness to their trauma.
  • Describe any challenges you may experience between the meaning you hold based on your personal beliefs and working within the client’s potentially different belief framework.
