Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and Additional Learning Outcomes:

Faculty systematically assesses each student’s progress by examining a combination of knowledge and skills. Key performance indicators are course tasks, activities, or assignments selected by faculty to assess student learning in core content areas of the counseling curriculum. Key Performance Indicators are measured multiple times and at different points in time during the student’s master’s program.

This course has been identified as partially fulfilling one of the eight core content areas of the counseling curriculum, Counseling and Helping Relationships. The following content area objectives are addressed within this course via the designated Key Performance Indicator task described below.

1.      Develop and utilize basic communication and helping skills (attending, listening, reflection, rapport building) as well as begin the formulation of treatment plans.

2.      Acquire an understanding of essential interviewing and counseling skills, as well as elements of a therapeutic alliance. [2. F. 5. g.]

3.      Describe the counselor characteristics and behaviors that influence the helping process including age, gender, ethnic differences as well as verbal and non-verbal behaviors in addition to self-awareness of professional limitations and referral processes. [2. F. 5. f]

4.      Implement counseling skills that facilitate self-exploration and problem solving.

5.      Demonstrate ethically and culturally relevant strategies for developing helping relationships while understanding the help-seeking behaviors of diverse clients. [2. F. 5. d.]

  1. Demonstrate active listening, attending, empathy, respect, self-awareness, sensitivity to others and the skills required to relate to diverse individuals and groups.

Identify effective communication techniques for communicating electronically

Social Media Policy

Social media plays a huge role in most of our lives. It has literally changed the way some organizations do business and has definitely changed the way many people conduct themselves both in and out of work. Understanding how social media works in terms of making a workplace better or worse is fundamental in an organization’s success.

Imagine you work in the public relations department of your company, or one in your chosen field. Your business does not currently have a social media policy to guide its interactions online.

Research social media policies at several organizations. For example, Nike, McDonald’s, CVS–any organization for which you can find social media policies. This research will help you to create your own policy.

Write a 350- to 700-word social media policy for your organization that you will share with upper management. This policy should include the following:

Introduce your policy by explaining the relevance of social media in the workplace and why your organization should adopt the policy you created.

Address the appropriate use of social media at your place of business

Identify effective communication techniques for communicating electronically

Format your introduction as an e-mail to your company leaders. Make sure to use effective communication by taking your audience into consideration. Also consider format in terms of a formal e-mail.

Format your assignment according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines.  Cite and reference and plagiarism check.

Discuss how Christian Ethics (including the relevant biblical, theological, philosophical, and historical aspects) would address the ethical issue and compare or contrast this to how your two ethical theories would solve the issue

Applied Ethics Presentation human euthanasia

Prepare an applied ethics presentation (12-15 slides, with speaker notes)

creating a 12-15 slide power-point presentation. I’m included a sample of a strong powerpoint below, but it was done for a slightly different assignment, so keep this in mind.I first want to give you a formatting tip: you need strong argument and aesthetic/rhetorical effectiveness. In a powerpoint, the best way to achieve this is to keep your slides reserved for bullet-points and visual aids, and put the majority of your argument in the notes. For this powerpoint, you will need to choose a particular ethical debate that is currently relevant in your field. You will need to:1) Explain the issue from an ethical perspective, equally presenting the strengths and weaknesses of both sides of the debate: why does each side think what they think? In doing so, make sure that you identify the crux questions: those questions on which the debate as a whole turns.

2) You will need to choose two of the primary moral theories/thinkers that we’ve covered in this course and explain how each would respond to/solve the ethical dilemma in question. Make sure that you explain their theories before attempting to apply them.

3) Discuss how Christian Ethics (including the relevant biblical, theological, philosophical, and historical aspects) would address the ethical issue and compare or contrast this to how your two ethical theories would solve the issue.

4) Choose a model of moral decision making and, given the data that you’ve presented in the points above, use that model to work through finding a solution to the issue.5) Provide a concluding summary argument for your own solution to the debate, which should be reflected in the work that you’ve done on the above points.

Describe the psychological effects of violence that the children from Nigeria might be experiencing?

Homework Question

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Cultural Considerations

As a mental health worker in a large city, you have been asked to work with refugee children who have been relocated from central Nigeria to live with foster families in your city. The children are between the ages of 9 and 13, boys and girls. They were rescued from a refugee camp in Nigeria where conditions were very poor. People were cramped and slept in rudimentary shelters. Food was scarce, and disease was rampant. Prior to arriving in the camp, the children were exposed to brutal violence. They saw their families murdered, houses burned, and witnessed or experienced sexual assault. Some were also injured in the attacks on their villages.

Utilize the Culturegrams database in the Argosy Online library, the Ethics and Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (2010), and your readings to write a paper addressing the following:

  • Describe the psychological effects of violence that the children from Nigeria might be experiencing? Be sure to consider issues such as gender and age.
  • Design an intervention program to address the children’s exposure to violence. Remember to consider individual, family, and community needs.
  • Describe the elements you would incorporate into a prevention program designed to foster resilience in the children from Nigeria, as well as break the cycle of violence that we learned can occur for children exposed to violence. You may research existing programs that utilize best practices as we have learned in this course, or design your own program.
  • Reflect on the debate between “cultural universality” and “cultural specificity”. How would you reconcile this debate within the context of the ethics code for psychologists?
  • Discuss why it is important to take into consideration cultural traditions when designing an intervention program. Describe at least two specific Nigerian cultural traditions and how you would use this knowledge in designing your intervention program.
  • Briefly describe at least 2 ethical considerations that one would need to take into account when intervening with children as victims of violence in general, as well as pertaining to cultural issues specifically

By Week 5, Day 5, format your paper in APA style, using research gathered from the sources above (i.e., module readings, Culturegrams, and the ethics code) to support your response. Your paper should be between 4 and 5 pages in length and include a cover page, abstract, and reference list.Submit your assignment to the M5: Assignment 1 Dropbox.

Neuropsychology

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 1 in the text and review the required websites for the week including the NeuroJobs Career Center. In your initial post, discuss a potential career path that interests you in an area of neuroscience and share your answers to the following questions with your classmates:

  • Why does this career path or position interest you?
  • What brain functions and neuroscience most interest you and why? Select one or more from the following list:
    • Neurobiological theories that explain dysfunctions in vision, language, memory, emotion, and behavior networks
    • Receptor and neurotransmitter theory in relation to behavior

  • What academic training is required?
  • Are there additional requirements (clinical practicum, research background)?
  • What types of employment opportunities are available in this area?

How would you define cultural competency?

Developing diverse knowledge about other populations helps improve cultural competency. This competency can be developed through independent reading, attendance at relevant seminars, or supervision from professionals in the field with appropriate backgrounds. Cultural competency is important to the assessment process.

Review the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics at the following:

  • American Counseling Association. (2005). ACA code of ethics. Retrieved from http://www.counseling.org/Resources/aca-code-of-ethics.pdf

Respond to the following:

  • How would you define cultural competency?
  • Why is cultural competency important for substance abuse counselors?
  • How would you acquire this skill?
  • Which ACA ethics codes discuss cultural competency, and what measures should counselors take to prevent ethical code violations in these areas?

Support your responses using your module readings and authoritative resources. Incorporate theory and factual information in your response.

Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources

Explain any psychological theoretical perspectives presented in the article and how they either support or refute the information provided in the review article

Annotated Bibliography for the Article Review Final Paper

This week, you will research and create an annotated bibliography of five peer-reviewed articles that were published within the last 10 years and relate to the article you selected in Week Two for your Article Review. The peer-reviewed articles you select should be researched in the Ashford University Library and represent a variety of viewpoints on the subject matter. They may support or refute the information presented in your chosen article for review. Each of the peer-reviewed articles must include a complete reference that is correctly formatted in APA style as outlined by the Ashford Writing Center and an annotation of five to six well-developed sentences in your own words that summarize the source and describe its applicability to your selected topic. Please note that no sections from the abstracts of the articles should be included in your annotation. In your annotation for each peer-reviewed article, analyze psychology as a science as it is presented in the article and explain how it relates to this particular topic. Assess the professional roles presented in the article and describe how they relate to the roles as presented in the article you have chosen for review.

Explain any psychological theoretical perspectives presented in the article and how they either support or refute the information provided in the review article. Evaluate contemporary applications of psychology as they are described in the article and compare these to the descriptions within the article for review. For more in-depth assistance with your annotated bibliography, please visit the Ashford Writing Center located under the Learning Resources tab in the left-hand navigation panel of your online course.

4.           Provide a handout that outlines the above information and any other handouts that are needed to implement the group session.

·         Instructor was provided with a handout regarding the group

Summary of Group Session:

·         You all did a great job of introducing yourself

·         Great explanation of confidentiality regarding group counseling

·         Great at involving the group in the introduction and setting up group rules

·         Great job at engaging the group in the group discussion and keeping them engaged in the various activities

·         Your handout was excellent; very informative and great organization

·         Great visuals for the group to have

·         Great use of humor during the group session

·         Great job at co-facilitating the group session

·         Great choice for “Saving Sam” activity; all activities were great

·         Recommendation: When doing any kind of exercise and it involves disclosing or sharing, it might be a good idea to allow the clients to share without necessarily calling on them, especially when it comes to this topic. Some clients may not feel comfortable sharing or perhaps do not feel prepared enough to share.

·         Recommendation: When interrupting your co-facilitator, it might be a good idea to ask if its ok to interfere or interrupt before doing so, otherwise it appears that you are cutting someone off without allowing them to finish their thought process.

·         Recommendation:Just a word of caution when sharing about personal information, read the room before sharing or try to make the connection and whether language and content is appropriate.

·         Recommendation:Before turning off the lights, it might be a good idea to ask the group if it is ok and if everyone is comfortable with the lights off. Some group members may get triggered with darkness. Or, it is always ok to leave at least one light on.

·         Recommendation:The Heart Activity was amazing, its always a great way to make a point. However, it’s a good idea to have your co-facilitators make sure that the rest of the group members are ok and not going into crisis or are if they need support because they were triggered.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Chapter Objectives

•       Outline the history of special education in the United States

•       Explain the categories of disabilities

•       Discuss the procedures for IDEA and Section 504 in the schools

•       Describe some counseling strategies for children with special needs

•       Talk about working with the families of children with disabilities

The Situation

•       Children with disabilities are different from the norm

•       Their problem is just as much society’s perception as the limitation of the child

•       Counseling is only partially about the special need

•       It is more about dealing with society’s reaction to it and the effects of those reactions on the child

•       They are often treated poorly both at school and at home

Describe two ethical violations and two instances of professional misconduct presented in the case study

Ethical Violations—When Things Go Wrong

Most complaints against clinical mental health counselors are in the areas of competence and conduct (e.g., client abandonment, sexual conduct, dishonesty); business practices (e.g., billing, reports, documentation); and professional practices (e.g., termination referrals, employment opportunities, nonprofessional relationships).

Specific information regarding ethical complaints to state licensure boards, despite its obvious importance, can be difficult to obtain. Complaints can be filed by clients, colleagues, attorneys, or some other interested party, such as an employer or parent of a client. The process of investigating these complaints is quite tedious and can lead to actions or sanctions against the counselor. This, in turn, can affect the counselor’s ability to practice. Clearly, no counselors are exempt from having complaints filed against them; therefore, the best protection is to maintain an ethical practice.

For this Discussion, use the Case Study Analysis Worksheet located in the Learning Resources for this week. Then select one case study from the ACA Ethical Standards Casebook and consider potential consequences of engaging in these violations and how you would safeguard against them in your own counseling practice.

Post by Day 3 a brief description of the case study you selected from the ACA Ethical Standards Casebook. Describe two ethical violations and two instances of professional misconduct presented in the case study. Explain one consequence that may result from each of these situations. Finally, explain what you would do to safeguard against each in your counseling practice.

Be sure to use the Learning Resources and the current literature to support your response.
