You are a psychologist in an urban community that has seen a 200% growth in its immigrant population over the past 3 years. Eighty-seven percent of this population speaks a language other than English at home. You work for a community mental health center, which is seeing an increase in referral from this population primarily because of the children’s interactions with the school system. The children typically become bilingual quickly. The parents are typically less fluent in English than their children; however, approximately 30% of the adults in this immigrant population are fluent in English and hold advanced degrees and middle- to upper- middle class jobs. Sport psychology consultants utilize assessments as a tool to gather important information from teams, athletes, and coaches, and use the results to help inform interventions. In this assignment, you will explore different types of assessments and practice explaining their use to potential clients.

For this assignment, you will propose five assessments that can be used within your consultation with the Bulldogs team.  Make sure to include the following in your proposal:

• Explain the psychological assessments in terms of what they address, measure, and how they are administered.
  • What does each psychological assessment address?
  • How is the assessment taken and how is it scored?
  • How long does each assessment take to complete?
• Explain the relevance of the psychological assessments that were chosen.
  • Why were these particular assessments chosen?
  • Why would these be appropriate to use with the Bulldogs team?
• Explain how the assessment results will be used to inform intervention and approach strategies for the Bulldogs team.
  • What feedback would you give the coach based on the results?
  • How would the scores on the scales guide your suggestions?
• Analyze ethical considerations when administrating assessments in an applied setting.
  • How will you administer the assessments?
  • How will the results be used with the athletes or team?

1) Describe the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviors.  Identify one of your own self-defeating or negative thoughts and explain how this thought impacts your feelings and your behaviors.  How can you change this thought and what would be the outcome of thinking differently?

2) All of our words carry meaning. Thus, as a counselor, we have to be cautious (but not so cautious that we are constantly in our head) about our choice of words and the way that these words are used. What are some linguistic (the way that we use language and words) issues that we must take into account during an interview?

3) Describe some of the common question “pitfalls” that were identified in the reading. (I’ll attach the reading to refer to)

4) This chapter reinforced some of the important elements of open ended questions, that we talked about in the previous weeks.  So, what I want you to do today is to use open questions in the real world.  When you have a conversation with your significant other, friend, child, or parent, be aware of how you are asking the questions, and turn the question into an open ended one. For instance, when you pick your child up from school today, instead of asking “How was your day” (a close ended question) try “tell me about your day”.  Please share about your “experiment” below. note: avoid asking a “why” question!
