IRB
Most Scholarly Practice Projects require an Institutional Review Board (IRB) review, with the determination of complete review, expedited review, or exempt. After students successfully defend their SPP Proposals, they submit an application to the IRB seeking approval of the study/project.
The application may be one of three types:
- 1. Exempt from review: This is for studies with no intervention or maybe just for a medical record review.
- 2. Expedited review: This is for studies with minimal physical or psychological risk to subjects.
- 3. Complete institutional review: This is for studies that may pose risks to subjects.
Later, you complete the College IRB application, and you also may be required to obtain IRB approval from an outside organization(s). The time for approval may range from weeks to months, with complete review usually taking the longest. You should review the IRB website, including deadlines for application submission, to take project timelines into considerations and be prepared to make adjustments as needed.
