South Africa’s TRC involved a trade off between truth and retributive justice. In a democracy such trade-offs need to be justified. In other words, South Africa needs to morally justify it’s failure to punish those who committed crimes during the apartheid years. Based on the readings, choose a justification and argue for it. How would detractors of the TRC respond to your argument? How would you respond to their criticism?
