Research Project

Purpose:

The purpose of this research project is to closely examine some nonverbal symbol through an empirical research project. This in-depth study will cumulate in a paper and then a short oral report. You will work with one other person.

Project:

The research project will be a field study where you will “enter a natural setting in an attempt to answer a general research question. Your mission will be to conduct the six steps of research: 1) review of literature, 2) a theoretical perspective, 3) methodology for collecting data, 4) collection of data, 5) analysis of data, 6) application of findings.

Research:

The research steps will be more specifically discussed in class. In general you will want to begin by selecting a subcode category to research. Preview the chapters in your text for some ideas. Additional notes on the research process will be given in class.

The review of literature will consist of several journal articles. You should consult a minimum of 10 scholarly sources for the review of literature. Articles must be cited in both the text and bibliography. Use your text as a starting point for references. Give your self enough time to order articles through the library if we do not have a particular journal.

Your study will examine a particular hypothesis or research question of your choice. This will be a field study. No other studies will be accepted. A minimum sample of 100 observations must be mad.

Final Product:

The final paper should be 8-10 pages in length and utilize APA format. All pertinent raw data should be included in a folder with the paper. Your paper will be due after your oral presentation. Your oral presentation will be a 6-8 minutes summary of your research and findings in panel format.
