Value: 100 points

Due: In an effort to facilitate scholarly discourse, create your initial post by Day 3, and reply to two of your classmates by Day 7.

Grading Category: Discussions

Initial Post

In your initial post, using the NONPF core competency you chose in Week 2 Choice: Core Competencies, discuss ways you as a student have or can begin to exemplify this competency. These exemplars can be from clinical experiences over the past year, course work or assignments completed in other classes, and internal (employment) and external (regional, state, national) professional activities.

In this initial post, you are asked to provide exemplars that are personal experiences. However, the rubric includes having three references. If you do not have three references, that is okay; you will not be graded down on references for this discussion. However, your initial post will probably contain at least two references (one being the NONPF competency document itself and the other related to nursing practice, etc.).

For the two reply posts, select a posting from your classmates who chose a different competency and discuss how your preceptor demonstrated proficiency with this competency during your clinical practice and what you have gained from that experience. If you have not worked with a preceptor yet, you may choose an example of an NP whom you have worked with, or an NP whom you have observed. If you are having difficulty identifying a personal story, please feel free to demonstrate your understanding of a second competency through an evidence-based essay that adds depth to a peer’s initial post.

In this initial post, the core competency I have chosen to discuss based on the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) is policy. This core competency area is significant to healthcare delivery to ensure the distribution of safe and healthy practices. This competency area provided by the NONPF has been proven to be an essential behavior for all NPs and is required for entry into practice (NONPF, 2022). Policy enactment can often manifest as the result of an identifiable gap. I have personally had the pleasure of creating a policy within my place of work. This came about when I was fairly new to my community nursing position. I was placed in a situation where I felt there needed to be more safe guards for the nursing staff in relation to medication distribution. In fact, community nurses experience many workplace health and safety issues within daily practice due to provisional care and policy inadequacies (Terry et al., 2015).I began to brainstorm alternative ideas that could be implemented to reduce the risk of medication error. I then contacted the director of nursing for the organization I worked for and presented my idea and rationale. Because the community organization I worked for at the time was so large, this specific issue I was aiming to address had been overlooked and unintentionally gone unnoticed. My idea was discussed among the board members and created into a policy shortly thereafter. It was then implemented across all teams in the Worcester County area under this organization. I felt very proud and my job felt so much safer after this accomplishment. Being able to contribute to the development of a health policy during my time as an RN was rewarding and I welcome the idea of doing so as a nurse practitioner as well.

Technology and information literacy are important in health care. These skills have enabled health and science to progress in life-changing and lifesaving ways. Technology has provided tools that can be used to better patient healthcare, help n research, and continue to address and make changes in the healthcare industry (NONPF, 2022). Technology has supported healthcare workers and streamlined many processes. This competency has been met. As a medical professional working in an intense environment, many of these technologies are used daily to make lifesaving possible (NONPF, 2022). The electronic medical record is a tool that is used on every unit to assist healthcare workers to centralized and filter important information about the patient. The HER digitalizes important health records such as allergies and past surgical history that is all relevant in health care.Working in the emergency department, scan is often completed on patients present with internal pain. The scan is a technology and resources used by the staff to make appropriate medical diagnosis (Lee & Yoon, 2021). Examples of some advanced imaging technologies are MRI, CT scans and x-rays. Proficiency in technology helps the healthcare worker to capture the image and then interpret the results. The simple usage of the diamap and thermometer for vitals is critical in all units. As healthcare worker, we understand that patient’s condition can change immediately. Regularly checking on the patient through their vitals can help staff medicate and treat potential disaster without complication using such a simple technology. Its information changes the outcome of a visit to the emergency department. All of this is critical in health care. Technology can also help is addressing ethical issues such as consent for treatment (Lee & Yoon, 2021). It can protect patient information and help respond to threats if required. The information relayed by the technology is used to make crucial medical diagnosis appropriate treatment plans that can save the patient’s life (Lee & Yoon, 2021). It is essential for healthcare practitioners, administrators, and patients to continually develop and refine their technology and information literacy skills to navigate the evolving healthcare landscape effectively.Reference:Lee, D., & Yoon, S.
