Annual competencies are one way to help educate staff on the need for being diligent with the care provided to our patients. A few of these “never events” include; pressure ulcers stages III and IV, falls and trauma, Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI), Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI), and foreign object unintentionally retained after surgery (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, n.d.). Nurses play a pivotal role in the prevention of hospital-acquired conditions and these never events.
