Case Study Analysis

The purpose of this assignment is to challenge students to think critically and strategically by analyzing the case assigned. After reading the case, the students should answer the questions at the end of the case. The questions should stimulate thought-provoking responses and showcase the students’ ability to provide theory to application. Answers should be succinct, but sufficiently address the concerns. The typical number of suggested pages is 4-6 pages, depending on the complexity of the case and the number of questions asked. Outside sources are not required, but welcomed. If using outside sources, remember to cite them in APA format. The paper should be double-spaced with 12 pt. font.

Please make sure all criteria is correct and fully understood.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia – Discussion

I am so happy that our book covers dyslexia. The first brain imaging lab I worked for while I was a student studied dyslexia. At the time it was a hot topic and there was even a story about the research our lab was doing in Times Magazine.

Unfortunately, even though there are still so many interesting questions to ask about dyslexia and there are still so many people who have dyslexia it isn’t as popular a topic these days. In the lab we did fMRI studies comparing brain activity in dyslexic children and children without dyslexia. We found that there were average differences in brain activity patterns. Those differences in brain activity patterns lead to differences in the way the mind works. These differences lead to difficulties in reading and other tasks but they also lead to advantages. Please watch this 13 minute video that makes that point very well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyab_VSBCAk (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

In the time I spent researching the brain in several different labs one of the things I noticed was that actually there are so many differences between everyone’s brain structure and brain activation patterns. That is one of the reasons that studying the brain can be so difficult. Differences in the brain lead to differences in the way our minds work. But that is an advantage if we work together! We have the option of getting someone else’s perspective on our problem or work because all of our minds work differently to some degree.

Read the section in module 13.2 (14.2 in the 11th edition) called “Dyslexia”.

There are several underlying difficulties that cause difficulty with reading in dyslexia. Make sure you understand what they are know the patterns in the brain related to those functions.

Then post about the following (about your own mind based on personal experience, not necessarily having anything to do with dyslexia): How does your mind work? What problems do you run into because of the way your mind works? How do you use the way your mind works to your advantage?

OR

Comment on a classmate’s post comparing the way your mind works to theirs in detail.

Microbiology Day Three Assignment

Answer critical Thinking question #2 for chapter 6 on page 180. Answers should be submitted in word document with any associated references used

1 E.Coli was incubated with aeration in a nutrient medium containing two carbon sources, and the following growth curve was made from this culture

A) Explain what happened at the time marked x

B) Which substrate provided “better” growth condition for the bacteria? How can you tell?

2  Assume that after washing your hands you leave ten bacterial cells on a new bar of soap. You then decided to do a plate count of a soap after it was left in soap dish for 24 hours. You dilute one gram of the soap 1:106 and plate it on heterotrophic plate count agar. After 24 hours of incubation, there are 168 colonies. How many bacterial were on the soap? How did they get there?

3) Heat lamps are commonly used to maintain food at about 50 degree C for as long as 12 hours in cafeteria serving lines . The following experiment was conducted to determine whether this practice poses a potential health hazard.

Beef cubes were surface-inoculated with 500,000 bacterial cells and incubated at 43-53degree C to establish temperature limits for bacterial growth. The following results were obtained from heterotrophic plate counts performed on beef cubes at 6 and 12 hours after incubation.

Why is the topic of choice of personal interest to you?

Course Project Task # 2

Course Project Task # 2  Choose Your Topics  In this assignment, you will list and discuss three areas of personal interest for the research project. The goal of this assignment is to help you begin the process of narrowing down initial ideas for your research paper into three concrete ideas. You will explore the reasons for examining these issues and the viability of each topic as a research project.  For this assignment, complete the following: •Select three topics of ethical conflict in sport that are of interest to you. •For each topic, discuss the following: ◦Why is the topic of choice of personal interest to you? ◦What is the relevance of the topic to the concepts you have learned? ◦How you would go about examining these topics in a research paper?  Write a 250–300-word response for each of your three topics and submit it to the Discussion Area by the due date assigned.  In addition, post a copy to the M2: Assignment 3 Present your response in Microsoft Word document format and name the file SP6300_M2_A3_LastName_FirstInitial.doc. All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.  Through the end of the module, review at least two responses submitted by your peers. Provide an objective feedback, addressing the following: •Examine the relevance of the topics chosen. •Provide suggestions on improving or elaborating on their initial ideas. •Also, provide alternative ways to examine their ideas, if you think it might help them establish a solid research question.     Assignment 3 Grading Criteria   Maximum Points   Accurately identified and clearly described three topics of interest.  8   Clearly described the relevance of the topics to the concepts you have learned and explained how each topic will be further examined.  8   Wrote in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrated ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources, displayed accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.  8   Participated in the discussion by suggesting improvements and providing alternative ways.  8   Total:  32

APA format, three references, at least 300 words

Review the following case study:

Chief Complaint:

A 23-year-old woman presents with complaints of muscle weakness in the face.

History:

The patient is a 23-year-old administrative assistant who complains of intermittent muscle weakness in her face that has been getting worse over the past 3 months. She also states that as she chews, her jaws feel tired. Swallowing has also become difficult. She reports episodes of double vision (diplopia), which seems to occur after reading for a few minutes in the late evening. With certain strenuous activities or after typing for long periods of time at work, she reports problems with bilateral arm weakness.

Physical Examination:

Notable ptosis (drooping) of the eyelids after repeated blinking exercises. When asked to smile, she appears to be snarling. Reflexes and sensation are normal in both upper and lower extremities. There is considerable weakness of the arms noted bilaterally after exercise.

Case Questions:

  1. Is the patient’s condition neurological, musculoskeletal, or both? Explain why and support your thoughts with evidence-based literature. What would be a possible neurologic or musculoskeletal condition causing the symptoms?
  2. Explain the pathophysiology behind the condition.
  3. What pharmacological agent(s) are commonly used to treat the disorder and how do the agent(s) alter the pathophysiology of the condition?
  4. What would be your educational plan for the patient?
