Why is LYME Disease emerging and re-emerging in New Hampshire

The article I found regarding emerging diseases in my community was found on the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services website. This site was able to provide many emerging diseases specifically affecting New Hampshire at this time. Since New Hampshire is a state with drastic season changes, I thought the prevalence of lyme disease was relevant. This article talks about Lyme disease being the most commonly ‘caught’ tick borne disease in New Hampshire, and the prevalence includes numbers close to half a million people getting diagnosed yearly across the nation (Tickborne Diseases, 2022). Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria that the tick carries known as “Borrelia burgdorferi”. This disease can cause a wide range of symptoms but most commonly includes body aches, joint pain, fatigue, and if left untreated could develop into a heart failure (Tickborne Diseases, 2022). The article also mentions risk factors for developing lyme disease which is significant to New Hampshire since the summer months brings many tourists who are not often familiar with tick bites and tick borne illnesses.
