Week 9 Response 1/1

Sustaining change can be difficult, as there are many variables that can affect implementation. One critical component of EBP is to ensure that practice change is part of an organization’s culture so it will continue to impact outcomes over time. Name two potential barriers that may prevent your EBP change proposal from continuing to obtain the same desired results 6 months to a year from now, and your strategies for overcoming these barriers.

Professor and Class,

Introducing change in a clinical setting can be challenging as numerous barriers affect implementation; for instance, changing the culture to which the healthcare professionals are accustomed may be a challenge and may take time to change (Geerligs et al., 2018). Two barriers that may hinder the change project from obtaining the same desired results six to one year after implementation are financial constraints and time constraints.

Successful implementation and sustaining of the educational programs will require adequate financing (Tappen et al., 2017). The financial resources will aid in acquiring ideal educational materials and source qualified fall management experts to train the nurses. If the organization cannot finance the educational programs, the system will be sub-optimal and will not effectively manage in-patient falls. I would recommend involving external stakeholders in each implementation stage to overcome the financial constraints. External stakeholders would include professional organizations and local, state, and federal governments willing to support the running of the educational programs financially.

My organization attends to many patients daily seeking medical services or are referred from other facilities. Therefore, nurses in the facility are busy, and with the nurse staff shortage, time is a significant constraint. Nurses may not be able to attend the educational sessions as required, and therefore the evidence-based strategies may not reflect in their practice. To overcome this, I would recommend collaboration between the healthcare professionals and adequate staffing (Heng et al., 2022). Through collaboration, the healthcare team can attend the educational sessions in shifts, and every member can benefit. In addition, adequate staffing will also ensure that everyone can attend the sessions without halting the normal facility operations or interfering with the quality of services.

Professional presentation is an effective way of communication and a way of presenting oneself in the best way possible. It is a great tool that supports talk and visualizes complicated situations so as to bring attention to a certain subject. However, foul presentations have an effect on communication since poorly designed presentations distract and irritate the audience. To convey the right message to the audience, one must possess the right confidence needed in achieving success.

Regarding professional presentations, my major personal strength is clear communication with body language. All through, I have found myself expressing coherently and articulately towards compassion fatigue among nurses in mental and behavioral health facilities. This has enabled me to communicate effectively and in a deeper way about the importance of education in solving the underlying problem thus helping to improve the services and outcomes of patients in the facility. Moreover, I’m able to authenticate my voice hence making me more audible and this usually engages my audience and help to boost my confidence. Although clear communication has helped me to discuss the issue in a deeper way, I have found words to be never enough. Part of what completes the message is my body language. According to Neuliep (2017), body language also known as non-verbal communication is a tool that communicates through the body thus supporting one’s message and ensuring that the message is both heard and clearly understood. To communicate my message concerning education as a way of solving compassion fatigue among nurses, I have found making eye contact with my audience builds faith in what I say and brings trust with them. Mirroring my body language through emotions and thoughts has helped my message to be received more easily by the audience. Other body languages that have made my communication effective are the use of hands when speaking and making movements while in the room.

However, despite all this, I have found myself being a little nervous at the time of presentation and this has stood out to be my major weakness. Communicating the topic of compassion fatigue among nurses in a mental and behavioral health facility has not been a major challenge but talking and presenting it in front of large groups of people have always made me nervous. Being nervous has made me sometimes fix my eyes on the papers and not look at the audience. Also, it makes me talk very fast and not stand still. More so, it makes me forget essential concepts that could have otherwise proven to be significant to my audience.

A major improvement in my strength is understanding the topic of compassion fatigue among nurses very well so as to make it more engaging to the audience. Additionally, it will involve using more simple visual aids with clear notes and color, hence ensuring that I speak freely with the confidence that is required (Deming, 2014). On the other hand, I need to improve my weakness, and this is through practice. This will involve first holding small gatherings with friends and families and then speaking to them. Also, participating in debates, and declamations among others will help me gain the confidence that will move me up to bigger events with a large crowd. Working on these skills is essential especially when presenting your findings in a more formal setting since this not only makes you a greater presenter but also achieves success and professional growth. More so, one is able to gain the relevant experience required for the success of a certain facility.
