Week 10 Response 2/4

Discuss why EBP is an essential component of the practice of a BSN-prepared RN. Identify two ways in which you will continue to integrate evidence into your practice and encourage it within your work environment. What obstacles could challenge this plan, and what steps will you take to minimize their impact?

Scientific evidence is needed to prove that new approaches or guidelines should be enforced. The best practices and high-quality patient care should be backed up by proven facts and evidence. Nursing is a vocation that emphasizes on meeting the requirements of human beings in diverse health situations, so it is significant to use the best evidence to make protocols and interventions. “By evidence-based practice (EBP) it is understood a set of techniques, processes, and activities understood as the best to perform a given task, consistent with the values, objectives, evidence of health promotion, and understanding of the environment in which the practice takes place. In nursing, in addition to technique — so closely related to professional practice —, requires extensive knowledge of values and beliefs, as well as seeking out skills that involve intuition for the most appropriate decision-making” (Lima et al., 2022). I have already been able to apply this to my recent projects at work. I feel that I have more reliability in my discussions during our meetings by having researched current evidence-based practices on the topic. I now print articles that back up my argument in order to present it and make my points valid. I will continue to do research and make sure that I have evidence to back up many of my project change requests that I will make with the corporate office. Change through the corporate office is much more difficult than on a local level because they are not on the front lines and facing the changes that we are pushing for.

Some obstacles that would come up would be the lack of continuity from the staff. There are too many nurses under short term contracts and this can hinder the continuity of the education and protocols put in place. This situation would be considered an obstacle because there is a lot of miscommunications when there is so much staff turnover. Job satisfaction can be a motivator to continue the expected practices as well (Kagan et al., 2021). Another hurdle would be not having the proper resources available due to nationwide shortage or problems with the supplies the facility receives. There may be many more obstacles that can come up but with the right parties involved, things can move forward for improved patient outcomes.
