Week 10 Response 2/2

Discuss why EBP is an essential component of the practice of a BSN-prepared RN. Identify two ways in which you will continue to integrate evidence into your practice and encourage it within your work environment. What obstacles could challenge this plan, and what steps will you take to minimize their impact?

(T, W 6/13)

Evidence-based practice is a priority of not only the BSN prepared nurse but every practicing nurse at any level of education from associates degree and above. The exposure to evidence-based practice promotion increases with education levels and a BSN prepared nurse promotes the safety and care of their patients which is best done with evidence-based practice. Integrating evidence-based practice in clinical practice is important and BSN prepared nurses are in a good position to evaluate and promote evidence based practice within their clinical setting. Promoting evidence-based practice in places like an ER are applicable for me and is important to review what evidence-based practice is. Evidence-based practice combines the best evidence/research with clinical knowledge to produce the best possible patient outcome(Asselta, 2022). Increasing the resources and support in nurse residency and orientation in emergency departments was seen as a strong predictor of the success of the nurse and the use of evidence-based practice(Asselta, 2022). Challenges of this could be the lack of orienting nurses to provide the correct residency guidance and teaching of evidence-based practice. Another barrier to producing evidence-based practice within the emergency department is the support of management and the providers working. Overcoming these obstacles involves gathering evidence and educating the decision-makers of the department about the new evidence-based practice. Another research article identified perceptions of lack of educational resources and staff to change and improve the outcomes of ventilator associated events(Madhuvu et al. 2022). This mindset of “doing the best we can with what we have” is due to staffing shortages and burn-out amongst healthcare workers. Overcoming this starts with management improving their support of staff and increasing educational in-services to promote safe and updated care for staff to learn from.
