Socw 6301 Wk 10 Assignment: Article Review And Critique

By now, you should be aware that the findings from a research study are only part of the story. As a consumer, hoping to inform practice by use of an evidence base, you want to know much more. A sound research study includes all the steps highlighted in previous weeks: reviewing existing literature, focusing a research question, choosing a qualitative or quantitative method for answering the question, designing the study including selection of data collection procedures and/or measures, procedures used, data analysis plan, and findings. In addition, the study commonly discusses how ethical concerns were addressed and acknowledges the limitations of the study. For this assignment, you review a published research study with two purposes in mind:

  • Observing the structure and content of the article
  • Comparing the content of the article to the recommended content of sections for a research study By Day

Submit a 7-10 page critique and review of the article, which includes the title page and the reference list. Follow the guidelines below:

  1. Use the quantitative or qualitative research article that you located and that your instructor approved as part of the Week 5 assignment.
  2. Provide an APA reference for the article you select.
  3. If you selected a quantitative research study, use the “Quantitative Article Review and Critique. If you selected a qualitative study, use the “Qualitative Article Review and Critique.” Respond to all the questions.

Be sure to include the questions in your critique. This will cause your Turnitin report to show high similarity to other students’ papers. However, do not be concerned about that. Do, however, appropriately paraphrase and cite specific details from the article you review.

Performance Enhancing Drugs

Week 2 Discussion

Week 2 Discussion

This week we learn about the brain and the nervous system. As we learn about how chemical reactions affect us, it made me think of a question.  Do we truly control our actions and behaviors?  Or do we act based solely on the chemical reactions that happen in brains and nervous systems?  What do you think?  Which is it?  Free will or chemical reactions?  In your discussion post, which option do you agree with?  Support your response with information from either our textbook or from the video below.  Remember to earn full credit, you need to have a total of 3 responses; 1 original and 2 replies.     Watch Video How does caffeine keep us awake? – Hanan Qasim

When boys and girls are born, does their DNA already know what it means to be masculine or feminine?  Or do boys and girls learn masculinity and femininity by watching others?  Is it nature (biology) or is it nurture (environment)?  Watch this video:

When you think about what you have seen and read in our text, decide if you think if it’s EITHER GENETICS (NATURE) OR HOME/ENVIRONMENT (NURTURE) that determine whether you believe the actions of women and men are based more on genetics or the expectations and dictates of society.  In your discussion, it’s important to have your original response and then two other replies to earn full credit.  Do your best to engage with others and have a total of 3 posts in the discussion.  Thank you! Strength-based and Wellness Approaches

 Discussion: Strength-based and Wellness Approaches

From a wellness perspective, school counselors are mindful to provide support for students not only in the areas of academic achievement and career development, but personal/social well-being. Is a student positioned for success in his or her core academic curriculum if he or she experiences deficits in personal areas? Issues such as teen pregnancy, substance abuse, truancy, even anxiety and depression tend to have a negative relationship with school achievement. Thus, how relevant is the mental health and emotional well-being of students?

For this Discussion, you explore strength based and wellness approaches that you would implement when working with a specific student issue of your choosing.

Post by Day 3 a description of a strengths-based and wellness approach you might use when working with a student on a particular issue. Explain how this approach may effectively meet the needs of your chosen student issue. Finally, explain one intervention you might employ to help a student with this issue progress towards his or her goals. For this Discussion, you explore strength based and wellness approaches that you would implement when working with a specific student issue of your choosing.

Developing a Theoretical Orientation to School Counseling

Developing a Theoretical Orientation to School Counseling

Identify your own theoretical orientation toward school counseling, integrating or selecting from the theories and applications presented in this course. You may also integrate additional theories with which you are familiar, but you must support your main ideas with information gleaned from scholarly literature and address their relevance to the practice of school counseling.

The purpose of this Project is to demonstrate your ability to understand, integrate, and apply theories of counseling in your school counseling specialization based on the knowledge you have gained in this course. This project is intended to be beneficial for your professional development by having you actively think about how your personal attributes, skills, emotions, and knowledge influence and shape your selection and application of theory in school-based settings.

The Assignment:

In a 5- to 7-page (not including references), double-spaced, APA-formatted paper, summarize the theory or theories you intend to integrate into your work as a school counselor. Structure your Assignment to the following key questions or areas and connect your responses to theoretical foundations, while offering scholarly support for your ideas. In addition to the course materials, you must include at least five scholarly sources.

  • Explain your theoretical orientation and how your chosen theory(ies) addresses the role of the school counselor, which includes promoting students’ academic, career, and personal/social development.
  • Addressing Adlerian as my primary and Reality and Choice Theory as my integrations.
  • Describe the nature of the school counselor-student relationship and its relative importance, both according to your view and the perspective of your chosen theory(ies).
  • Describe the key goals, according to your chosen theory(ies), of the school counseling process. (In other words, how will students be different, as a result?)
  • Describe developmentally appropriate techniques and procedures of your approach and their application to school-based settings.
  • Identify key factors that promote and enhance student success, both according to your own views and the perspective of your chosen theory(ies). (Explain what key factors facilitate positive change).
  • Describe specific student populations, presenting issues, or developmental concerns best suited and least for this approach.

The lesson on intelligence

Assignment 1

The lesson on intelligence presents the range of intelligence quotient scores in relation to the Normal Distribution and discusses the extremes of intelligence on either side of the curve.  While we hear a lot about ‘gifted and talented’ programs in school, we don’t hear much about it after one graduates from high school or college.  For this assignment, you will visit a website devoted to an organization for people solely with high I.Q. scores. You will then submit your own thoughts on intelligence in general as well as what you’ve learned about this group.

  1. Visit the “Mensa” website (http://www.mensa.org). Explore the various links and read about its mission, who it serves, qualification for membership, etc.
  2. Provide a summary of what you’ve found and your thoughts on the organization.
  3. Next, discuss your own views on intelligence – what were your thoughts on the various theories presented in the textbook/lesson?   Be sure to link material you’ve learned in this lesson to demonstrate your ability to appropriately apply information.
  4. Your summary should be comprehensive and more than just a paragraph in length. It should demonstrate thoughtful dialogue and critical thinking.
  5. You must cite all of your sources appropriately in APA format and include references.

Several years ago, Lenore Skenay made headlines when she submitted an editorial detailing an experience that she granted her son. Access the following:

  1. The editorial:  9 Year Old Rides Subway Alone
  2. The website: Free Range Kid
  3. If you are unable to access the links use Google to search for the article.
  4. After having read the textbook and viewing these additional readings, reflect on your own thoughts about this.
  5. Summarize, in general, what this mom did. Then, provide your own opinion.  You are free to voice whatever opinion you have, but make sure you back it up with support from our text or other sources (make sure you cite your source).  (This is worth 20 points)

Cults

Cults

What aspects of social psychology discussed in your textbook might help explain why someone might become attracted to a harmful cult or terrorist group?

  • After watching the video, pretend you have been given a job with the United Nations and you have been asked to work on addressing the conditions conducive to the rise of harmful cults and spread of terrorism.  Given what you now know about the relevant social psychological mechanisms at play, what might be some of the steps you would want to take?Chapter 12 SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY

Recovery Community

Recovery Community

To gain an understanding of the recovery community, it is important to attend an open meeting of a 12-step group or other group focused on recovery from an identified addiction.

Locate an open recovery meeting in your community (Dallas Texas) or an online recovery meeting that you can attend. It must be an open meeting, meaning not a closed group: outside people are welcome to attend. Just like the experience of a person seeking recovery, it is your responsibility to find a list of meetings and explore to find a meeting or group.

Attend at least one recovery/meeting

Write a 3 page paper that addresses the following questions about your experience:

· Describe the meeting and the major recovery program components you observed during the meeting.

· What was it like for you to engage in this experience? What did you notice about yourself in the process? How does your spirituality influence your experience of the group?

· What do you believe to be the most important take-home message from the experience? What, specifically, from this experiential exercise will inform your work as a therapist?

· What, if anything, was the most surprising part of the experience?

· What would you want to tell someone, who may minimally understand addiction and recovery, about your experience? Consider what you may share with a future client.

· Include any additional personal or professional reflections. Tie your experience to what you have been reading about and learning in class.

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Sociocognitive and Complexity Theory Perspectives

Prior to beginning this discussion, please read the following required articles:

  • “Language Acquisition Socialization: Sociocognitive and Complexity Theory Perspectives”
  • “The Learning Brain: Lessons for Education: A Précis”
  • “The Cultural-Historical Foundations of the Zone of Proximal Development”
  • “Self-Determination, Self-Regulation, and the Brain: Autonomy Improves Performance by Enhancing Neuroaffective Responsiveness to Self-Regulation Failure”
  • “Acquisition, Learning, or Development of Language? Skinner’s ‘Verbal Behavior’ Revisited”
  • “Linguistic variation and micro-cues in first language acquisition.”

Based on your resources this week, choose three areas of language acquisition that you found most interesting and that were unknown to you prior to this week.

In your initial post,

  • Explain the theoretical perspectives of each of these chosen areas.
  • Apply skeptical inquiry to a brief discussion about why language acquisition is an important area for scholars and educators to understand when developing learning opportunities.
  • Apply the concept of language acquisition to your own academic success. Has your own language development affected your success as a student? As an employee? How? Based on the resources and your current knowledge, do you believe you could develop areas of language acquisition, personally, that would be beneficial to you, your loved ones, or your friends?

Your initial post should be at least 500 words in length and thoroughly discuss each of the elements in the prompt

By the due date assigned, submit your essay as a Microsoft Word document to the Discussion Area at the bottom of the page.

By the end of the week, comment on at least two of your classmate’s submissions using the peer review questions provided below.

The major assignment for this week is to compose a 900-word essay comparing The Odyssey with either The Song of Roland or Dante’s Inferno. In this paper you will write an in-depth analysis using your own ideas and excerpts from the epic poems in the form of quotes, paraphrase, or summary.

Select one of the following topics:

  1. Although nearly two thousand years separate The Odyssey and Dante’s Inferno, both works are epic poems that:
    • Explore the relationship between humanity and the divine. Employ journey as a metaphor for maturation.
    • Reveal and teach cultural values about leadership.
    • Caution audiences about the appeal of temptation.
    • Contemplate the nature of immortality.
    • Compare and contrast how one of these topics is developed in The Odyssey and Dante’s Inferno.
  2. The Song of Roland and The Odyssey, though separated by thousands of years, are both epic works whose protagonists are warriors engaged in violent conflict: Roland is a medieval Crusader and Odysseus is on a long journey home after conquering Troy.
    Additionally, both works:

    • Explore the relationship between humanity and the divine.
    • Reveal and teach cultural values about leadership.
    • Contemplate the nature of immortality.
    • Examine the moral and practical implications of loyalty and betrayal.

Compare and contrast how one of these topics is developed in The Song of Roland and The Odyssey.

Proofread the rough draft to ensure:

  • The thesis is clear and focused, and the introduction includes all the necessary information.
  • The discussion of evidence includes quotes, paraphrases, or summaries and synthesizes this material and your ideas.
  • The conclusion is appropriate and reinforces the paper’s main ideas without repeating the introduction word for word.
  • The essay is formatted in APA style throughout. It uses appropriate grammar, spelling, and mechanics, and quoted material does not exceed 25% of the paper.

When responding to your peers please answer the following questions:

  • Locate the paper’s thesis. Is it obvious or unclear? Does it establish an interpretation of a key theme from the poem? Is the thesis as specific as it needs to be?
  • Is each paragraph organized around one key point? Do topic sentences clearly indicate the focus of each paragraph?
  • Does the author support each main point with direct quotations that are analyzed and explained? Do you have any suggestions for improvement?
  • Where do you disagree with the author’s analysis? What aspects of the poems are left unexplained?
