Why are philosophy and science important to a practice discipline?

Nursing homework help

Philosophy and Science in a Practice Discipline

A nurse enters a patient’s room to check her vitals and spends some time talking with the patient’s family how they are doing.

Later that day, another nurse responds to the patient’s call button; she becomes concerned when she discovers that the patient is running a fever and is in pain despite receiving the medication that has been ordered for her. She recalls a similar instance with a different patient, and keeps that in mind as she asks the patient about how she is feeling.
These seemingly simple actions are guided by philosophy—each nurse’s view of nursing and appropriate patient care.
Do you, personally, think nursing should rely solely on biological science? Or do you think it is important for nursing to incorporate a broader, more holistic approach to care? How do you know what you know? What sources of information are most significant to you? How should you determine what types of research are applicable to nursing practice?

To prepare:

  • Reflect on your professional experiences, and assess how philosophy and science influences nursing practice.
  • Consider how the scientific method is supported by philosophy, and how it influences nursing knowledge.

By tomorrow 5/31/17, post 550 words essay in APA format with 3 references from the list below, that include the level one heading as numbered below:

post a cohesive response that addresses the following:

1)       Why are philosophy and science important to a practice discipline?

2)       How do they legitimize the nursing profession?

Discussion: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Family Settings Versus Individual

                           Settings

Whether used with individuals or families, the goal of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is to modify client behavior. Although CBT for families is similar to CBT for individuals, there are significant differences in their applications. As you develop treatment plans, it is important that you recognize these differences and how they may impact your therapeutic approach with families. For this Discussion, as you compare the use of CBT for families and individuals, consider challenges of applying this therapeutic approach to your own client families.

                                                                       To prepare:

· Review the media, Johnson Family Session 3, in this week’s Learning Resources

and consider the insights provided on CBT in family therapy.

· Reflect on your practicum experiences with CBT in family and individual settings.

Explain curative factors that occurred in the group

Nursing homework help

                                          Group Processes

Group therapy is an effective treatment option for a wide range of disorders and is much more cost-efficient than individual therapy. As a result, many insurance companies are showing preference for group therapy over individual therapy. This has led to more therapists including group therapy in their practices, making it very likely that you will facilitate group therapy in the future. To successfully develop groups and apply this therapeutic approach, it is essential for you to have an understanding of group processes and formation.

This week, as you examine group processes and stages of formation, you explore curative factors of groups and strategies for managing intragroup conflict. You also assess progress for a client family receiving psychotherapy and develop progress and privileged psychotherapy notes for the family.

Assignment: Group Processes and Stages of Formation

In your role, you must understand group processes and stages of formation, as this will help you develop groups and determine an individual’s appropriateness for group therapy. Whether you are at the beginning stages of group formation or facilitating a session for a developed group, it is important to consider factors that may influence individual client progress.

For this Assignment, as you examine the video Group Therapy: A Live Demonstration in this week’s Learning Resources, consider the group’s processes, stages of formation, and other factors that might impact the effectiveness of group therapy for clients.

                                                                                To prepare:

· Review this week’s Learning Resources and reflect on the insights they provide

on group processes.

· View the media, Group Therapy: A Live Demonstration, and consider the group

Discussion: Using Improvement Science Models to Promote Quality and Safety

…while all changes do not lead to improvement, all improvement requires change.

—United States Agency for International Development

Improvement science models bring together research and evidence-based practice to identify the most effective ways to promote quality and safety in health care. As a central tenet of quality improvement, attention must be paid to the processes that contribute to outcomes.

In this Discussion, you examine quality improvement models and evaluate how they could be applied to address specific issues within health care organizations.

To prepare:

Review the improvement models presented in the Learning Resources.

Evaluate each of the models and select two on which to focus for this Discussion.

Consider how each of the two models could be utilized in a health care organization to promote quality and safety. Think about the following:

How does the model bring together research and evidence-based practice to facilitate quality improvement?

How does the model contribute to a culture of quality and safety?

How does it address changes in process?

Reflect on the quality improvement issue and the health care setting that you are addressing for your Course Project. Of the two models that you have selected, determine which one you, as a nurse leader-manager, would use to address this issue. Also consider how this would relate to one or more of the IOM’s six aims for quality and safety.

Post your analysis of how the two improvement models that you selected could foster a culture of quality and patient safety and facilitate changes in process that promote positive outcomes. Explain how you would use one of these models to address the quality improvement issue in the organization that you have selected for your Course Project, and how doing so would relate to one or more of the IOM’s six aims for improving quality and safety.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days using one or more of the following approaches:

Offer additional strategies for using your colleague’s selected model to address the IOM’s six aims for quality.

Share insights for engaging frontline staff using your colleague’s selected improvement model.

Compare the steps in the improvement model that you selected with your colleague’s.

Suggest an alternative model for your colleague to utilize in his or her identified health care organization.

Discuss the dangers of failing to consider the validity of a research study

Validity in Quantitative Research Designs

Validity in research refers to the extent researchers can be confident that the cause and effect they identify in their research are in fact causal relationships. If there is low validity in a study, it usually means that the research design is flawed and the results will be of little or no value. Four different aspects of validity should be considered when reviewing a research design: statistical conclusion validity, internal validity, construct validity, and external validity. In this Discussion, you consider the importance of each of these aspects in judging the validity of quantitative research.

To prepare:

  • Review the information in Chapter 10 of the course text on rigor and validity.
  • Read the method section of one of the following quasi-experimental studies (also located in this week’s Learning Resources). Identify at least one potential concern that could be raised about the study’s internal validity.
  • Consider strategies that could be used to strengthen the study’s internal validity and how this would impact the three other types of validity.
  • Think about the consequences of an advanced practice nurse neglecting to consider the validity of a research study when reviewing the research for potential use in developing an evidence-based practice.

Post on or before Day 3 (1) the title of the study that you selected and your analysis of the potential concerns that could be raised about the study’s internal validity. (2) Propose recommendations to strengthen the internal validity and assess the effect your changes could have with regard to the other three types of validity.(3) Discuss the dangers of failing to consider the validity of a research study

Contrast the types of information that you gained from examining the two different research approaches in the articles that you selected.

Application: Critiquing Quantitative, Qualitative, or Mixed Methods Studies

Critiquing the validity and robustness of research featured in journal articles provides a critical foundation for engaging in evidence-based practice. In Weeks 5 and 6, you explored quantitative research designs. In Week 7, you will examine qualitative and mixed methods research designs. For this Assignment, which is due by Day 7 of Week 7, you critique a quantitative and either a qualitative or a mixed methods research study and compare the types of information obtained in each.

To prepare:

  • Select a health topic of interest to you that is relevant to your current area of practice. The topic may be your Course Portfolio Project or a different topic of your choice.

Using the Walden Library, locate two articles in scholarly journals that deal with your portfolio topic:  (does hand washing and appropriate staff dressing among the surgical ward nurses reduce cross infection during patient management?) 1) Select one article that utilizes a quantitative research design and 2)  select a second article  that utilizes either a qualitative OR  a mixed methods design.  These need to be single studies not systematic or integrative reviews (including meta-analysis and metasynthesis). You may use research articles from your reference list. If you cannot find these two types of research on your portfolio topic, you may choose another topic.

  • Locate the following documents in this week’s Learning Resources to access the appropriate templates, which will guide your critique of each article:
    • Critique Template for a Qualitative Study
    • Critique Template for a Quantitative Study
    • Critique Template for a Mixed-Methods Study
  • Consider the fields in the templates as you review the information in each article.
  • Begin to draft a paper in which you analyze the two research approaches as indicated below.
  • Reflect on the overall value of both quantitative and qualitative research. If someone were to say to you, “Qualitative research is not real science,” how would you respond?

    To complete this Assignment:

  • Complete the two critiques using the appropriate templates (see attached files).
  • Write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:
    • Contrast the types of information that you gained from examining the two different research approaches in the articles that you selected.
    • Describe the general advantages and disadvantages of the two research approaches featured in the articles. Use examples from the articles for support.
    • Formulate a response to the claim that qualitative research is not real science. Highlight the general insights that both quantitative and qualitative studies can provide to researchers. Support your response with references to the Learning Resources and other credible sources.

As you complete this Assignment, remember to:

  • Submit your paper to Grammarly and Turnitin through the Walden Writing Center. Based on the Grammarly and Turnitin reports, revise your paper as necessary.
  • Reminder: The School of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references. The School of Nursing Sample Paper provided at the Walden Writing Center provides an example of those required elements (available from the Walden University website found in this week’s Learning Resources). All papers submitted must use this formatting.
  • Combine all three parts of this assignment into one Word document including both critique templates and the narrative with your references.  Submit this combined document.
