Name two different methods for evaluating evidence. Compare and contrast these two methods.

Research is a diligent, systematic inquiry or study that validates and refines current knowledge and develops new knowledge. The research’s ultimate goal is to create an empirical body of knowledge for a discipline of the profession, such as nursing. Research is needed to provide a quality learning experience for nursing students; through research, nurses can develop and refine the best method for delivering distance nursing education and using simulation to improve student learning. Nursing research is also required to generate knowledge about nursing education, nursing administration, healthcare services, characteristics of nurses, and nursing roles. (Burns and Groves, 2012). (Polit and Beck, 2016) also define research as a systematic inquiry that uses disciplined methods to answer questions or solve problems, and the ultimate goal of the research is to develop and expand knowledge. Nursing research is a scientific process that confirms and refines existing knowledge and generates new knowledge that directly and indirectly impacts nursing practice. Nursing research is vital to building an evidence-based practice for nursing. (Burns & Grove, 2012).

There are two major groups of researchers, qualitative and quantitative, and they both have different means of evaluating their research or study. Quantitative researchers use several criteria to assess their research, namely reliability and validity, while qualitative researchers use trustworthiness. Trustworthiness encompasses different dimensions such as credibility, transferability, confirmability, dependability, and authenticity. I will discuss one from each group- Reliability refers to the accuracy and consistency of information obtained in a study. It is associated with the method used to measure variables. The concept of reliability is also essential in interpreting statistical results. Statistical reliability can be used with a broad group of studies, and the result supports an inference about what is true in a population. Credibility is an essential aspect of trustworthiness, and it refers to confidence in the truth of the data and its interpretation. Credibility in the qualitative study can be enhanced through various approaches, but one strategy’s merit is because it has implications for the design of all studies, including quantitative ones. (Polit &Beck, 2017)
