Reaction Paper 1
The ethical dilemma for Reaction Paper 1:
You are scrolling through a social media platform (such as Facebook) and come across a post in an autism-related group/community. The original post is from a mom (let’s call her Anna) of a two-year old who is asking advice to the group members about her toddler’s challenging behaviors. Anna describes some of the behaviors she has noticed at home and even mentions that she has been thinking about having her child evaluated for autism but hasn’t done that yet. One responder to the post (let’s call her Vicki) identifies herself as a BCBA who is also a mom to a child who is autistic. Vicki shames Anna for not already seeking an evaluation/diagnosis, tells Anna that based on her own experience both as a BCBA and an “autism mom” that Anna’s child is “almost definitely autistic,” and suggests specific interventions to use in the meantime. You have witnessed/read this exchange.
Reaction papers should be maximum 3 pages typed, double-spaced, APA style, excluding references. There is no minimum, but it would be difficult to complete this task well in under 1.5 pages.
- Briefly summarize the ethical dilemmas in the case and identify all of the players in the situation, as well as the contingencies acting on their behaviors. Be sure to correctly use behavior analytic language.
- Refer back to the Ethics Code (either the BACB’s or the IBAO’s) and identify next steps for you who are hypothetically facing the situation.
- Make sure to follow the rubric to receive the best grade (grammar and mechanics are part of the grade, as is using APA style)
- Do NOT include a title/cover page
