Questions

In what situations would a psychotherapist decide to apply a person-centered therapy?

What are the requirements for this therapist /client relationship to thrive in this approach?

Person-Centered TherapyThe person-centered therapy approach believes that individuals are better helped if they were encouraged to focus on their current subjective understanding rather than on some unconscious motive or someone else’s interpretation of the situation (McLeod, 2019). Rogers strongly believed that for a client’s condition to improve therapists should be warm, genuine and understanding. In his words, “As no one else can know how we perceive, we are the best experts on ourselves.” ( McLeod 2019), Rogers rejected the deterministic nature of both psychoanalysis and behaviorism and maintained that people behave in a certain way because of how they perceive their situation. For a person-centered approach to happen, three ingredients must be present.• Congruence in counseling, – the authenticity of the therapist• Unconditional positive regard- the ability for the therapist to maintain a positive attitude always• Empathy- The ability to perceive and understand the pains, hurt, and joy of another as the person sees it (Corey,2016).Person-centered therapy is more successfully used for individuals whose intent is to gain more self-confidence, a stronger sense of identity, and the ability to build healthy interpersonal relationships. These individuals are clients who want to know that they can trust their own decisions. The person-centered approach alone or in combination with other types of therapy can be helpful for clients who suffer from grief, depression, anxiety, stress, abuse, or other mental health conditions and are determined to take steps toward it ( Buckley, 2019)
