NUR-520 Project Two

Overview

It is required to understand how epidemiological studies are performed to understand the determinants of disease. Some of these topics include understanding the distribution and determinants of disease occurrence, understanding the measurements used to identify the issue, identifying components of studies to assess the quality of the research, and using that knowledge to help make sound clinical decisions. The skills in this project will be built upon for Project Three, where you will make a clinical decision.

Prompt

Choose one infectious disease and find articles or other resources that provide details about that disease. Provide specific evidence from at least five scholarly sources to support your claims. Specifically, discuss the following:

  1. Epidemiologic Triangle: Identify the components of the epidemiologic triangle for the selected disease.
  2. Describe the Epidemiological Principles: Explain distribution regarding epidemiology and the various determinants affecting the occurrence of your chosen disease in a particular population. These determinants can include person, place, and time factors.
  3. Interpret the Basic Measures of Disease Frequency: For the disease chosen, identify and interpret at least five of the basic measures used in your scholarly sources that you found to study this disease in a selected population. Use the list of possible basic measures below as a guide:
    1. Frequency
    2. Proportion
    3. Rate
    4. Incidence
    5. Prevalence
    6. Crude mortality rate (death rate)
    7. Risk

In the study “Emerging Challenges and Opportunities in Infectious Disease Epidemiology,” linked in the Supporting Materials section below, several types of studies are discussed. Choose three study designs from the article and discuss the following:

  1. Study Design: Assess the aspects of the study design for each of the three studies selected.
    1. Identify the types of designs for the chosen studies
      1. Explain how you know which study design is being used. Do not just report that the article refers to a particular study design being used.
    2. Determine what the strengths and weaknesses of each study design are.
  2. Critique the Study: Specify at least two potential sources of bias and two potential sources of confounding in each of the three studies. For each study, also describe any methods that were used to control for confounding either in the design of the study or in the analysis that was performed.

What to Submit

To complete this project, you must submit the following:

Project Two: Your submission should be a 4- to 7- page Word document. Also include a title page. Use 12-point Times New Roman font, double spacing, and one-inch margins. Sources should be cited according to APA style.
