Abstract (25 pts) Write a detailed abstract for the experiment. The abstract is a summary paragraph. You should attempt to write summary sentences for an Introduction section, a Data Section, a Discussion section and a conclusion section. Then, attempt to put them together in a paragraph in such a way that it all flows together in a well-written paragraph.

Data (25 pts)

Provide a table that presents the relevant data collected to determine the percent composition. Include a sample calculation for percent composition. (20 points)

5 pts will be awarded on your accuracy. The more accurate the more points you receive. Make sure to be careful during the experiment. (5 pts)

Questions (25 pts)

1. A well-trained technician is expected to perform this titration with a percent relative standard deviation (% RSD) below 0.5 %.

% = (

)∗100%

Where Sv is the standard deviation of the endpoint volumes and V is the average of the three closest endpoint volumes. Calculate the %RSD and discuss how good your performance was. (10 pts)

2. Why is it useful to use an indicator in this titration? What would be the consequence if an indicator was not used? (5 pts)

3. It is mentioned in this manual that the glacial acetic acid (which is just pure acetic acid) and sodium acetate are used as a “buffer” to consume H+ acid which is produced. Attempt to write the net ionic equation for this reaction. Hint: one of the two reagents is a product, not a reactant. (5 pts)

4. It is critical that the interactions holding together the Fe-indicator complex are significantly weaker than those holding together the Fe-EDTA- complex. What would be the consequence if an indicator was chosen that forms a stronger complex with the Fe3+ than the FeEDTA- complex? (5 pts)
