Journaling provides a valuable tool for recording, reflecting on, and reviewing your learning. This approach provides an opportunity for you to “connect the dots” and observe the relationships between and among activities, interactions, and outcomes.

Unlike a personal journal of thoughts and feelings, this leadership journal is a record of your activities, assessments, and learning related to this academic experience.

Journal entries should include a record of the number of hours spent with your nurse leader each week.

Write a journal entry of 750-1,500 words on the subject of power, including the following:

Practicum Activities Reflection: Provide observations and thoughts on the activities in your practicum setting during Weeks 1 and 2.

Application of Leadership: Professional responsibility and power, authenticity, integrity, and emotional intelligence are key factors of multiple leadership styles. Discuss how you have observed your preceptor or nurse leader in your professional setting integrate these elements into leadership styles.

Practicum Project Preparation: What are your ideas for your practicum project? How does this project refine and build skills related to your career goals?

Leadership Video Reflection: Reflect on at least two things you learned from the “Servant Leadership – Issue of Power” video.

Use the “Leadership Journal Template,” located in Class Resources, to complete this assignment.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center

This week, you complete and submit your second journal entry. Your journal draws from evidence, concepts, and/or theories you have examined in this program, especially those related to your specialization. What have you observed during your Practicum Experience that you would like to analyze through your journal writing?

To prepare:

  • Reflect on your Practicum Experiences in Weeks 8-11.
  • Think about the evidence, concepts, and/or theories (evidence) learned throughout this program and your specialization.
  • Analyze a problem, issue, or situation that you have observed during your Practicum Experience.
  • Using a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources of evidence, consider what you have observed within the context of your specialty using appropriate concepts, principles, and theories. Give special attention to observed events that vary from the scholarly literature.
  • Determine how the problem, situation, or issue was handled in a manner that is consistent and a manner that is inconsistent with the theory, concepts, and principles detailed in the evidence.
  • Given the various evidence-based approaches that can be used in handling the observed problem, situation, or issue, think about a plan for approaching the matter differently.

To complete the Journal Entry:

In your saved version of the NURS 6600 Practicum Journal document, write a minimum of 250 to 300 words in APA format and 3 references from the list below. Include the level one headings as numbered below:

1)       Describe a problem, issue, or situation that you have observed during your Practicum Experience (no more than a half page). The problem that happened during week 9 of my practicum is that there was security breach on a few patients records. It was discovered that, some employees had accessed patients’ files with no authorization

2)       Using no fewer than three peer-reviewed sources of evidence, analyze what you have observed within the context of your specialty using appropriate concepts, principles, and theories. Give special attention to observed events that vary from scholarly literature. (See attached files on peer reviewed articles).

3)       Explain how the problem, situation, or issue was handled in a manner that is consistent and a manner that is inconsistent with the theory, concepts, and principles detailed in the evidence. (The hospital hired Healthicity which is a Healthcare Compliance & Auditing Software and Services company).

4)       Given the various evidence-based approaches that can be used in handling a problem, situation, or issue, formulate a plan for approaching the matter differently. (See agreement for the plan Healthicity came up with).

5)       Include references immediately following the content.

6)       Use APA style for your journal entry and references.
