is-a-genetic-counselor-necessary

The American College of Medicine Genetics says “genetic testing should be provided to the public only through the services of an appropriately qualified health care professional. The health care professional should be responsible for both ordering and interpreting the genetic tests, as well as for pretest and post-test counseling of individuals and families regarding the medical significance of test results and the need, if any, for follow-up”.

Direct to consumer genetic testing like what is done by 23&me is not ordered or interpreted by a health care specialist and there is neither pretest or post test counseling.

Do you think its necessary to have a health care professional administer and report on genetic tests? What are the concerns if patients have direct access to their genetic information without talking to a genetic counselor? Why would someone want to take the test without a genetic counselor being involved?
