     In researching policies, I encountered the Improving Care and Access to Nurses Act (or I CAN Act). This act addresses efforts to ensure that patients have access to high-quality care from our advance practice nurses, no matter what insurance they have (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2023). This includes those that are covered under Medicare and Medicaid. This is important considering 40% of those under Medicare receive services delivered by nurse practitioners (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2023). This act strives to remove barriers to accessing care via various means. Examples include authorizing nurse practitioners to order tests, certify certain illnesses for treatments, and perform all required exams needed in skilled facilities (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2023). This act is supported by more than 235 health care organizations which include American Psychiatric Nurses Association and the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses (Volpe, 2023).     Nurse practitioners must become more policy-aware because regulations have an impact on our scope of practice and are often moderated differently across various states. We should advocate for our practice so that improved access especially in rural and underserved populations are more easily achieved. There is ample evidence that proves expanded NP practice regulations improves care quality across a wider population, which only further emphasizes the importance for us to advocate and rally policy makers (especially in more restrictive states) in granting greater independence for APRNs (Yang et al., 2020).     Being a part of nursing organizations are also a great way for promoting and protecting the role of the nurse practitioner (Goolsby & DuBois, 2017). NP organizations according to our specific specialty are great ways to participate in identifying and developing health policies. Organizations can provide position statements and help educate its members to take a stand on certain practice areas (Goolsby & DuBois, 2017).
