gallery-assignment-1

1. Walk around the Art Gallery, and explore the exhibition until you find a work of art you like the most. Make sure to

take photo of the chosen artwork and information related to it. Identify and describe it. Try explaining why you think that artwork is the most appealing to you. Explain which formal elements or principles of composition were used in its creation. Were you attracted by its shape, color, medium, size, texture or something else?

2. Now put your chosen artwork into the context. All exhibited works of art were made in California in the last 50 years. Does your work of art in any way reflect or can be associated with Californian, West Coast or American culture, history and lifestyle? Why or why not? Use all factors you can find to support your ideas and claims.

3. Finally, make a comparison between works of art we have examined in class and artworks you have encountered at the exhibition. What differences do you notice between AHIS 2 (14th-19th century) and Contemporary art? Reflecting on what you have learned throughout the term, where do you think those differences stemmed from? How difficult is it to create a narrative around artworks from the gallery?
