Good Morning Professor and Class,

When I first started going to Strayer, I felt like I wasn’t smart enough or good enough for college. I felt like everyone in my class was so much smarter than me and I felt like I was too stupid to be there. I almost felt like I had no right to be there. Because I had these doubts and these negative thoughts going around in my head, I never spoke up in class and I would always try to hide in the back of the classroom because I didn’t want the professor asking me questions that I felt like I didn’t have the answer to.

Over time, I learned how to reframe my way of thinking by reminding myself that I was good enough, that I had a right to be there just like everyone else. I would even repeat these things out loud and I immediately felt better about myself. I kept doing this as time went on, and slowly but surely, I became a more confident student. By identifying my negative thoughts, evaluating them, and working on being more positive I was able to turn the tables around, and I am so glad I did!

Hello professor and class,

This topic is a double edged sword. On the one hand you have the fact that those that create a hostile online environment are causing people to self-harm, commit suicide (through online bullying), and are promoting hate and discord throughout the online environment. On the other hand you have the First Amendment which clearly states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. There are those that would cite the freedom of speech and press portion of the First Amendment to justify their transgressions.

However, just like all of our freedoms and laws, there are restrictions in place to protect those that cannot protect themselves. Policing the online community should be no different. There should be rules and laws in place to protect those that cannot protect themselves, and there should be punishments for those that break these rules and laws. If you are not allowed to go on a public broadcasting network and spout hate speech, then why should you be allowed to do it in online communities?

Thank you,

Dan
