Objective: to critically examine your progress this term and articulate your strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities as a public speaker as a means of self-improvement.

Grading: Grades for the Written Self Evaluation Assignment are based on (1) your ability to follow the instructions below and (2) your ability to follow the standard rules of written English (e.g., grammar, spelling, organization, etc.).

Instructions: Answer each of the following questions as they relate to your Tribute and Informative Speeches. Your answers should be written in the form of a formal essay, which should include an introduction, body, and conclusion. Your essay must be written in full sentences and observe all the standard rules of written English (e.g., grammar, spelling, organization, etc.). Your essay should be a minimum of 5 pages in length.

Questions to answer in your essay:

  • What were your speeches’ topics, specific purposes, and central ideas?
  • What introductory devices (I want to know both the types of introductory devices and the specific devices you used) did you use to grab and retain your audience members’ attention? Were they effective? Why or why not?
  • Do you think your introductions improved throughout the semester? Why or why not?
  • Explain at least one element in each speech’s introduction that you think you did well. Explain at least one element in each speech’s introduction that you think you could have done better. What can you do in the future to create even better introductions?
  • Explain at least one new concept that you learned in this class concerning the introduction of a speech.
  • What organizational patterns did you use to organize your speeches? Did you face any challenges in deciding which organizational patterns to use? Explain your answer.
  • What were your most and least effective pieces of supporting materials? Explain why they were either so effective or so ineffective. What can you do in the future to support your ideas even more effectively?
  • Do you think your ability to support your ideas improved throughout the semester? Why or why not?
  • Explain at least one element in each speech’s body that you think you did well. Explain at least one element in each speech’s body that you think you could have done better. What can you do in the future to improve on that/those element(s)?
  • Explain at least one new concept that you learned in this class concerning the body of a speech.
  • What did you say to conclude your speeches?
  • Explain at least one element in each speech’s conclusion that you think you did well. Explain at least one element in each speech’s conclusion that you think you could have done better. What can you do in the future to create better conclusions?
  • Explain at least one new concept that you learned in this class concerning the conclusion of a speech.
  • Describe your physical delivery style (e.g., gestures, posture, etc.).
  • Explain at least one element of physical delivery that you think you did well in each speech. Explain at least one element of physical delivery that you think you could have done better in each speech. What can you do in the future to improve your physical delivery?
  • Explain at least one new physical delivery concept that you learned in this class.
  • Describe your vocal delivery style (e.g., volume, rate, expressiveness, etc.).
  • Explain at least one element of vocal delivery that you think you did well in each speech. Explain at least one element of vocal delivery that you think you could have done better in each speech. What can you do in the future to improve your vocal delivery?
  • Explain at least one new vocal delivery concept that you learned in this class.
  • What do you think are your primary strengths as a public speaker?
  • What do you think are your primary weaknesses as a public speaker
  • Considering your answers to the previous questions, then, how would you assess your overall progress this term? Have you become a better communicator? Would you now be more willing to speak in public (e.g., work, PTA meeting, city council, etc.)? Explain.
