Clinical judgment

Pedro Gomez, a 5-year-old Hispanic male, was admitted via the emergency department following an all-terrain vehicle accident. He was taken to surgery from the emergency room for reduction of a compound fracture of the right leg. After a period in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), he is now on your floor. Pedro is sleepy but arousable. He has multiple cuts and abrasions on his arm and face. His parents are at the bedside.

Pedro Gomez was sitting in front of his uncle on an all-terrain vehicle when they hit a rock and Pedro was thrown off the vehicle. Pedro was wearing a helmet and reportedly never lost consciousness. There is no significant health history. He is on no medications. He has no allergies. Immunizations are up-to-date. Pedro has one older sister who is 7 years old. He is 46 inches tall and weighs 14.46 kg. Pedro had surgery to reduce a compound fracture and is now on the pediatric unit. He received morphine and cefazolin while in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU).
