Discussion Topic

Both Piaget’s Model of Cognitive Development and Kohlberg’s Model of Moral Development are outlined in stages, with one stage building off of the previous stage. Put yourself in the role of parent, teacher and juvenile justice judge and then in each role identify why it would be necessary to understand the cognitive/moral stage from which a child is operating. What are the most important aspects these development models for a parent, teacher and judge to be aware of? Provide examples and be sure to include specific stage characteristics.

Consider the relationship between public health and the social determinants of health. Some people view public health theory and the social determinants of health as two discrete concepts.

1-2 Reflection Journals: Social Determinants (two pages APA)

Note: In these journal assignments, be sure to connect your own experience to what is being asked of you in the particular journal prompt. Reflect on each question and support your answers using specific details and relevant examples. In reflecting on the themes of health policy and management that you have explored, describe how you have applied (or will apply) what you have learned.

Consider the relationship between public health and the social determinants of health. Some people view public health theory and the social determinants of health as two discrete concepts. Others look for causation: Do the social determinants shape population health or does population health create social determinants? How might competing views influence research, funding, policy decisions? For this journal submission, consider a variety of public health interventions intended to improve population health. Which interventions considered social determinants to successfully improve population health? In contrast, which interventions failed to consider social determinants? Describe some outcomes and opportunities for improvement. Next, review the connection between public health and public policy. Discuss how the outcomes of successful and unsuccessful public health interventions have shaped public

Identify the early iterations of the HIPAA act and how the law has been modified to facilitate easier access to consumer complaints and enforcement.

Imagine that you are a sophomore at Premier College. Over the past few months, you have not been well due to increased amounts of academic pressure and found yourself unable to concentrate in class or sleep well at night. You went to the student medical center for evaluation and, after consulting with the staff doctor, you were issued a prescription for the treatment of depression.

A few days later, one of your professors tells you that he too has had to take medicine for depression in the past. You ask him how he knew about your situation, and he replied that all student medical records are available to every instructor and staff member at Premier College. Hearing this, you feel that your privacy rights have been violated.

That afternoon you research privacy rights on the Internet and learn that filing a HIPAA privacy complaint to the OCR had been a tedious process before July 2009. On July 27, 2009, the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) delegated to the Director of OCR the authority to administer and enforce the HIPAA Security Rule. This action improved HHS’ ability to protect individuals’ health information by combining the authority for administration and enforcement of federal standards for health information privacy and security. Those standards are outlined in the HIPAA legislation. With the new regulation, the process of filing a privacy complaint has become simpler and more effective.

Then you research the steps involved with filing a privacy complaint with the OCR (http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/complaints/index.html), download the Health Information Privacy Complaint form at (http://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/ocr/privacy/hipaa/complaints/hipcomplaintform.pdf), and complete the form. While working on the form, you realize some sections are critical to your case and must be addressed carefully.

You decide to write about your experience in a paper for your Legal Issues in Information Security class. For this assignment:

1. Identify the early iterations of the HIPAA act and how the law has been modified to facilitate easier access to consumer complaints and enforcement.

2. Describe the overall process of submitting a health information privacy complaint to the OCR.

3. Identify specific sections of the complaint form that need critical attention while completing the form.

4. Analyze a few situations that can occur if the critical sections are not well identified.

5. Draft a brief summary, collating all your findings.

How has public health informatics improved public health and public health services offered to Americans over the last two decades? Describe one example that supports this statement.
How can current federal programs and mandates reshape the current public health landscape? State and describe at least one federal program or mandate. Explain how the program or mandate impacts public health informatics. Support your rationale with appropriate scholarly references.

Write your response in 4-page paper in Word format with at least 2 scholarly references. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Design a class that you would like to teach someday

Design a class that you would like to teach someday. The class must be at least 4 hours in length and must be multiple sessions. It can be four sessions of 1 hour each, or two sessions of 2 hours each, depending on your topic and target audience.

Begin by describing the institution that is sponsoring the class (e.g., academic, hospital, or community agency). Include the philosophy of the sponsoring organization and how that will affect the course you are developing.

Explain how you determined a need for this class (needs assessment).

Write a one-paragraph description of the class.

Identify the target audience.

Identify the learning resources you will use for the class (textbooks or other resources).

Write the program outcomes for the course and the learner objectives for each class session. Indicate which domains of learning are represented by each learner objective.

There is no predetermined length criterion for this assignment. It is intended that each student will develop a class that they can use in their selected area of education. You will complete this project in your next course, NUR-649E.
