Factors Affecting Vulnerability and Assessment of Needs

This week’s second discussion forum will focus on two selected groups:

  • Vulnerable mothers and children
  • People affected by alcohol and substance abuse

Review the video segments titled “Premature Babies: Risks and Costs” (Vulnerable Mothers and Children group) and “Social Cost of Alcohol Abuse” (People Affected by Alcohol and Substance Abuse group) through the Films On Demand database or in the textbook.

  • For each segment, select three specific factors from Chapter 2 (e.g., age, gender, culture, ethnicity, education, and income) that are present.
  • Reflecting on your experiences and knowledge gained in previous courses, discuss how these factors relate to the group’s vulnerability.
  • Based on the selected factors, assess the health care needs that can be inferred for each group. Discuss which approach(es) to care from Chapter 4, Section 4.1 (i.e., preventive, treatment, or long term), might help address them.

Your initial contribution should be 250 to 300 words in length. Your research and claims must be supported by your course text and at least one other scholarly source.  Use proper APA formatting for in-text citations and references as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Actions for Discussion 3: Healthcare Disparities

Your text, Chapter 7, provides compelling discussion on the sociocultural ecologies of disease and illness. With focus on the text’s Case Study: Impacts of a Cultural Ecology: Historical Trauma, American Indians/Alaska Natives, and Health (p. 92-97), discuss this case by sharing perspective on the questions below.

This obviously takes some referencing (minimum of one reference beyond text is required) and expect a good 175-200 words as a guide.

Can you think of any other internal cultural patterns that cause vulnerabilities to disease?

What could the hypothetical Chalmy people do to reduce their malnutrition levels despite the constraints they face?

Edberg (2013) describes the political-economic system is how resources and social benefits are distributed in a society, and more. What are some political-economic circumstances that could impede people from engaging in wellness activities, such as exercise as prevention for diabetes and cardiovascular disease?

What could be done to reduce the health consequences of historical trauma?

Follow instructions carefully: I live in Homestead, Florida. county Miami Dade. Sample letter is being attached. grading eval is being attached. Thank you.

Identify which two senators represent your state(FLORIDA) and who the congressional representative is for the district you live in. Of these three, who do you feel would be most sympathetic to your health policy issue?

Health Policy issue: Prescription drug Abuse

Write a 570-word petition letter to your senator or congressional representative regarding a health policy bill you would like to propose to address your selected health policy issue.

Include the following in your letter:

Identify who you are and who you represent.

Clearly define the issue that needs to be addressed, providing evidence that establishes the sense of urgency to take action.

Layout your proposal for legislation that will address the issue.

Provide at least two strong arguments that could persuade your senator or representative to support and hopefully introduce your proposal as a bill into the legislative process.

Utilize the articles you selected in prior weeks to support your proposal.

Research at least one opposing argument by locating academic articles using the University Library and provide a detailed response to your opposition’s argument.

If there is currently any active legislation that would negatively affect your selected issue, identify the legislation and explain why your senator or representative should vote against its passage.

Close out your letter by addressing how your proposed legislation may influence outcomes.

Utilize Box 44-2: Sample Letter/E-Mail to a Policymaker located on p. 396 in Ch. 44 of Policy & Politics as a guide.

While HIV/AIDS is still currently incurable, the prognosis for patients with this infectious disease has improved due to advancements in drug treatments. Consider the case of Kristy Aney. Kristy was diagnosed with HIV in 1992 and was told she would survive, at most, 10 more years. Despite unfavorable odds, Kristy is still alive 20 years later. Since her diagnosis, she has witnessed tremendous improvements in HIV/AIDS treatments which have helped patients live longer with fewer side effects. While she acknowledges that these drug treatments have kept her alive, she fears that improvements in drug therapy have led to more people becoming complacent about the disease (Idaho Statesmen, 2012). In fact, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States is higher than it has ever been (CDC, 2012). This poses the question: Is there a relationship between drug advancements, societal complacency, and infection?

To prepare:

  • Review Chapter 49 of the Arcangelo and Peterson text, as well as the Montaner et al (2014) articles in the Learning Resources.
  • Reflect on whether or not the prevalence of HIV cases might be attributed to increased complacency due to more advanced drug treatment options for HIV/AIDS.
  • Consider how health care professionals can help to change perceptions and make people more aware of the realities of the disease.
  • Think about strategies to educate HIV positive patients on medication adherence, as well as safe practices to reduce the risk of infecting others.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post an explanation of whether or not you think the prevalence of HIV cases might be attributed to increased complacency due to more advanced drug treatment options. Then, explain how health care professionals can help to change perceptions and increase awareness of the realities of the disease. Finally, describe strategies to educate HIV positive patients on medication adherence, as well as safe practices to reduce the risk of infecting others.
