ANNUAL COMPETENCIES ARE ONE WAY TO HELP EDUCATE STAFF ON THE NEED FOR BEING DILIGENT WITH THE CARE PROVIDED TO OUR PATIENTS

These are avoidable errors and regulations have been put into place to help with cost containment, as well as, to make patient safety a priority. By holding institutions accountable for the prevention of these events, institutions have begun to hold employees accountable also. Annual competencies are one way to help educate staff on the need for being diligent with the care provided to our patients. A few of these “never events” include; pressure ulcers stages III and IV, falls and trauma, Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI), Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI), and foreign object unintentionally retained after surgery (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, n.d.). Nurses play a pivotal role in the prevention of hospital-acquired conditions and these never events. While some nurses have shown skepticism and outrage by these new guidelines, these are preventable situations that at times can not be avoided, but the
majority of the time with due diligence they can be avoided.
