Now that you have practiced various activities on plant and animal cell reproduction, you should be ready to apply this information by completing these laboratory activities. Click on the () link provided above. You will see, “Laboratory 2: Cell Reproduction. Click on Laboratory 2 Cell Reproduction, and you will see, How Cells Divide. Again, read and review the introduction and click “Begin Assignment”. Follow the directions in Parts 1-4 before beginning the laboratory.Part 1 – follow directions as stated.

Part 2a – review summaries of mitosis in your text.

Part 2b – View the video. Be patient! It takes a minute or so, for the video to load.

Parts 3 and 4 – Follow the directions by clicking on the onion root tip and white fish blastula. When you are able to name all phases of mitosis with 100% accuracy, you can begin the laboratory.

LABORATORY 11b

MITOSIS TIMING LABORATORY

DETERMINING THE TIME SPENT IN DIFFERENT PHASES OF THE CELL CYCLE

In this activity, you will be presented with cells from the tip of an onion root. You will classify each cell based on the phase it is in. At the end you will count up the cells found in each phase and use those numbers to predict how much time a dividing cell spends in each phase. You can base your calculation on a total cell cycle of 24 hours

You will access the onion root tip for cell counting by clicking on the “Link located in the Mitosis Laboratory 11a.You will click on the “Link” (be sure to enlarge the root tip by clicking on the tip), count and record all cells in the five (5) phases in the chart below.Once you have counted and recorded the number of all cells within the entire root, you will be able to calculate the percentage of cells in each phase. From these numbers, you can determine the amount of time cells spend in each phase of mitosis during a 24 hour period.Time should be recorded in hours per cycle.

THE DIRECTIONS PROVIDED IN THE XANEDU COURSE PACK WILL EXPLAIN WAYS TO DETERMINE THE TIME CELLS SPEND IN MITOSIS.

Note: You will count a thousand or more cells.
